What type of camper vans are they?

We have one fully restored 1965 Splitscreen, three Bay Window VW Camper vans, built between 1972 and 1975 and one 80's VW Type 25. The Dormobile is a true classic and is tax exempt. All the vans have had some degree of restoration and have original 1970’s features. The vans have a rather retro feel to them – including the drive! Our expedition van, which is available for a limited time, is a 1995 LT35 conversion – it looks like a big Scooby Doo van and definitely gets noticed. On arrival we will show you round the van and demonstrate how to operate the cooker, heater and pop top, etc. We’ve found that 10 minutes doing this is worthwhile for avoiding that desperate erection of sleeping compartment in the dark or worse in the rain!

How many people will the Camper sleep?
Depends on the van – our Westy is designed to take 5 adults, and the others 4 or will take 2 adults and 2 children. Each van has the same number of seatbelts as berths. The expedition van is for two people with baby cot, if required.

What comes with the van?
The standard van inventory is detailed in the van’s section. However, we aim to provide all the equipment to allow you to make full use of the van’s facilities during your holiday. Each van has a twin hob gas cooker. There’s also a sink with pumped water and a cool box or fridge.

Does it come with a full tank of petrol?
Not necessarily, but we only ask you to return the van with roughly the same as what you were given it with.

Can we have the van for a long weekend or mid week?
We do offer mid week and weekend options and details are in the Tariff’s section. However, during peak time we can only accept bookings for full weeks only. Never wanting to disappoint anyone though, we may have part weeks available and will identify these in our Special Offers section.

How can I pay for my holiday?
The easiest method is Paypal's secure online payment service through our on-line booking form, however we can also take postal orders or cheques, made payable to Escape Campers. A deposit of £100 is required to secure your booking with the balance to be paid in full 4 weeks before your holiday.

Does the price include Insurance?
Yes, this covers you in the event of accident and there is a mandatory security deposit of £350 which is paid as a Security Deposit prior to the commencement of travel, this will be returned to you on the safe return of the van.

What type of insurance cover is provided to drive the van?
Each hire includes fully comprehensive insurance for 1 named driver. Each driver must be aged between the ages of 25 and 70 (please see terms and conditions for more details). The insurance excess stands at £500. However there a Collision Damage Waiver which can reduce this to zero for £17.50 a day, or to £350 for £7.83 a day. Driven safely and with the respect these older vehicles require this should never be a problem.

What are collection and return arrangements?
The vehicle can be collected from 12pm on Saturdays and must be returned by 4pm the following Friday. This is to ensure that we have enough time to turn the van around for the next booking.

Can you deliver the camper?
Regretfully, we can only deliver the campers to within a 20 mile radius of Irvine and there is a charge of £30 for this.

Can you look after our car?
You can leave your car with us, this service is free of charge but entirely at your own risk. Alternatively we can pick you up (or drop you off) at a fully insured secured airport parking facility which is about 8 miles away from the yard where our business is based.

I’m coming via the airport or train – can you pick me up?
Certainly, we are happy to meet you at the local train station, Glasgow Airport or Prestwick Airport. There is no charge for this service, but please do arrange this with us at the time of booking. If you would like to be collected from somewhere else, please contact us and we will see what we can do.

What if I’m late returning the van?
Please call the office on 07785 532280 if you think you are going to be late. Failure to advise us may result in you driving uninsured and you will then be breaking the law. You will also be delaying the start of someone else's holiday! A charge equivalent to one day's rental will be payable for all late returns.

Do I need to pay a security deposit on the Collection day?
Yes. There is a refundable security deposit of £350. This is to cover any damage caused to the van or its contents whilst in your hands. This deposit is payable by cash, traveller's cheque or credit card (via the paypal.co.uk online system). The security deposit can also be paid by cheque if received at least 7 days in advance. This deposit is fully refundable upon return of the vehicle as stated in the rental agreement, with the interior clean (including all cooking appliances) and the fuel replenished to level when hired.

What do I need to bring on the day?
Each driver must bring a valid Passport and a full driving licence (including the paper part if you have a new licence).
Also you will need to provide your bedding as this is not included in the hire. A duvet is fine for the main bed and we recommend sleeping bags for the bunks. If you prefer then we have laundry packs available at an additional charge provided they are booked in advance.

What are they like to drive?
Please remember these vans are over 30 Years old. All have had their engines replaced in the past few years so should be fairly reliable. They have been professionally maintained, but are still very old and should be treated with the respect that they deserve. They do not have power assisted steering, but are none the less extremely enjoyable and fun to drive. If you are unsure we can arrange a quick lesson before you head off and after an hour or so on the road you will be an a complete expert!

How fast are these classic camper vans?
VW Campers are not built for speed, but are more designed for a leisurely driving experience. We recommend 50mph. We ask that you respect the age of the van and drive considerately – remember you are on holiday not in a race!

Are the vans reliable?
The Type 2 Volkswagen Transporter is one of the most reliable vehicles ever made, after each hire the vehicle has a 30 point check and is fully serviced every 3000 miles. It should however be remembered that vehicles of this age are subject to occasional minor glitches.

What happens if the van breaks down?
All vehicles are regularly serviced by a specialist VW mechanic, but in this unlikely and extremely unfortunate occurrence then the vehicles are covered by AA relay support where they will take you to the nearest garage and we will arranged repairs if the AA can't fix it. Each van is also equipped with jump leads as it's easy to forget and overuse the power when parked up. Instructions are provided within the van and there is a 24-hour answer phone that you can always use to get in contact with us if necessary.

Can I go to Europe in the van?
Sorry, our insurer does not cover for travel other than the UK mainland. We can provide a customised itinerary to guide you around some of the best sights in Scotland specific to your interests. The hire includes free mileage up to 500 miles which is ample to travel around Scotland and the lake district. However, we would hope that you would respect the feelings of the vehicles and don't push them to the limit. A mileage excess of 22p/mile is chargeable upon your return should you overdo it.

Where can we camp?
There are a wide variety of campsites in Scotland with excellent facilities. The link below samples some Scottish campsites and we can supply detailed information on sites as part of your custom itinerary. There is a camping guide book in each van. If you are staying in Scotland you can camp almost anywhere. However, please respect other people’s privacy and land when choosing spots to pitch (especially if livestock are about). Please abide by the country code and remove all litter, leaving the area as lovely as you found it ready for the next adventurer.

What if it’s cold at night?
We can’t guarantee the Scottish weather and even though it can be glorious during the day, at night we can get cold snaps up to the end of June. We therefore have portable Propane gas heaters available for each van on request. These come with a spare gas cartridge and this will keep you toasty for about 4 hours. If you anticipate that you’ll suffer please advise and we can supply a few more cartridges at extra cost. Safety note: Please remember you must provide adequate ventilation when using gas equipment.

Each van has a CD/MP3 player and multi speaker arrangement for your musical enjoyment!

Can we take our bikes with us?
Yes. Bike racks can be supplied and is included in the price of your rental. Each rack holds two bikes.

What happens if I want to cancel?
If you are unfortunate enough not to be able to make the exciting holiday you have booked, then we will arrange a partial refund if we are notified 28 days prior to the date of actual hire. If we are notified within the 28 days then the deposit you paid on booking is unfortunately non refundable. See terms and conditions for specific cancellation terms. In all cases the deposit is non-refundable.

Can more than one of our party drive the camper?
Yes. Our insurer allows for up to three different people who can be named drivers. There is an extra charge for this. We will need to see their driving licences and passports too. Again, they must be over 25 years of age. Please contact us for further details.
